Review: Clockwork Princess

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices #3)
by Cassandra Clare
Published March 19th 2013
by Margaret K. McElderry Books

Summary from Goodreads:
A net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. Mortmain plans to use his Infernal Devices, an army of pitiless automatons, to destroy the Shadowhunters. He needs only one last item to complete his plan: he needs Tessa Gray.

Charlotte Branwell, head of the London Institute, is desperate to find Mortmain before he strikes. But when Mortmain abducts Tessa, the boys who lay equal claim to her heart, Jem and Will, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever.

As those who love Tessa rally to rescue her from Mortmain’s clutches, Tessa realizes that the only person who can save her is herself. But can a single girl, even one who can command the power of angels, face down an entire army?

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment, and the tangled threads of love and loss intertwine as the Shadowhunters are pushed to the very brink of destruction in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Thoughts:
Cassandra Clare is one of the few writers out there who can really make a love triangle work. I'm still reeling from the abundance of emotions depicted in this book. One moment I'm rooting for Jem and Tessa to get married and the next I'm hoping for Will to steal her away. Seriously, this is why I think The Infernal Devices successfully captured my heart compared to the more popular The Mortal Instruments series.

And yes Jem is the one constant character that I truly like in the series. He is the epitome of the tragic (and dying) second hero who is doomed to never get the girl despite all his efforts and sacrifices. The mystery and magical aspects are somewhat secondary to all the romantic entanglements between the three leads and as much as I was intrigued to find out the real reason behind Mortmain's obsession with Tessa, all I wondered about is who will she ended up with? I'm glad to say that the ending will definitely satisfy fans of both Will and Jem.

Verdict: 5 stars.
