Summary from Goodreads:
Rory Miller thought her life was over when a serial killer set his sights on her and forced her into witness protection. But a fresh start on Juniper Landing Island was exactly what she and her family needed. For the first time in years she and her sister hang out at the beach, gossip about boys, and party together. She's also made friends with a local clique--including a magnetic and mysterious boy named Tristan.

But Rory's world is about to change again. Picturesque Juniper Landing isn't what it seems. The truth about the swirling fog that rolls in each morning, the bridge that leads to nowhere, and those beautiful locals who seem to watch Rory's every move is more terrifying than being hunted by Steven Nell. And all Rory ever wanted was the truth. Even if it means learning that she can never go home again.

Thoughts:
It took me some time to finish Hereafter and although it is not that bad, it certainly is a bit slower compared to the more suspense filled first book; Shadowlands. Now that Rory has finally gotten rid of her stalker/creepy hunter, she is now settling into her new role as a Lifer who is supposed to usher dead souls to heaven or hell.

Although I love to find out more about the life in Juniper Landing and how this whole 'ushering souls' kind of thing really work, I'm finding myself slowly losing interest in the whole journey. Is it because there's too many rules and characters to keep track of or the glaring fact that Rory is just a very bland character to begin with? Add in a predictable love interest and a new plotline, by the end of the book I'm feeling kind of disappointed but certainly it piqued my curiosity enough to check out the third book. And may I just add that Shadowlands would have been a wonderful stand alone without drawing it out as a series.

Verdict: 3 stars.
